DREAD OGRE from Sweden formed a couple of years after STONEGRIFF disbanded. Ok, so what we have here is top notch heavy/doom metal – just the way we like it most. Surprised?
Well, you shouldn’t be at all. DREAD OGRE features such talented musicians as Ludwig Witt (GRAND MAGUS, drums), Jakob Kramsjö (STONEGRIFF, guitars and vocals), and Michael Lang (STONEGRIFF, bass). “Get Ready for the Storm” was produced by Andy LaRocque himself. Not bad, huh?
The “Get Ready for the Storm” album seems fairly unsophisticated to me.
The songs are gallantly slow (or mid-paced) and I would say quite memorable; thanks to the sound, which is warm and thick.
Add plenty of catchy and energetic heavy metal riffs and voila.
Yes, the riffs on “Get Ready for the Storm” are truly powerful and unforgettable.
As said, this music isn’t overly refined but there is something special about them and thus listening to this album becomes a truly breathtaking experience.
The rhythm section is, in my opinion, responsible for this album`s catchiness. Why?
Because the rhythm section perfectly merges all the elements into one.
As a result, there are no unneeded sounds on this album. This reconfirms something I have said many times before.
Three-piece bands are simply the best.Plus, very charismatic vocals by Jakob and voila: we get a very well-working album, that can keep listeners interested.
This music is a tad hypnotic, it is indeed hard to stop listening to these sounds. And this is why this album is neither boring nor tiresome. In other words, simplicity is power.
Yes, “Get Ready for the Storm” is a truly memorable album. DREAD OGRE proves that even these days good doom metal music must rely on the classic doom metal foundations.
Of course, their music isn’t too innovative. There is no denying this simple truth. But the spirit of (older) BLACK SABBATH and CANDLEMASS makes this album truly enchanting. Get this album unless you already did.
