Nestled in the scenic Vulkaneifel region of western Germany, DER DETZE ROCKT has steadily earned a reputation as one of Europe’s best-kept secrets among underground metal festivals.

With its rural setting, curated billings, and friendly atmosphere, the event stands apart from the overcrowded commercial festivals that dominate the summer season. Loyal fans return year after year for the festival’s welcoming vibe, professional organization, and uncompromising dedication to true heavy metal.

Looking Ahead: Der Detze Rockt 2025

The 13th edition of the festival is set to take place on June 20–21, 2025, and once again offers a line-up packed with speed, black, thrash, doom and classic heavy metal.
The announced bands are:
Doom Legends
• PENTAGRAM – American doom pioneers led by Bobby Liebling since 1971. Expect timeless classics and new songs at this show.
• CANDLEMASS – Swedish epic doom titans celebrating 40 years with their trademark majestic riffs and dramatic vocals.
Black, Death & Thrash
• DESTRUCTION – One of the Big Teutonic Four comes for a special live performance of “Infernal Overkill”, alongside tracks from their new album.
• HELLBUTCHER – The legendary Swedish black metal frontman Per Gustavsson (Nifelheim) will unleash raw, old-school ferocity from his band’s last year’s self-titled debut.
• NOCTURNAL WITCH – This German black/thrash act, compared to Desaster, will bring dark intensity.
• SCHIZOPHRENIA – Belgian death/thrash outfit with a punishing sound and aggressive energy.
• PREHISTORIC WAR CULT – A savage black/death power trio from Germany, delivering Barbaric Metal.
Classic & Traditional Heavy Metal
• SATAN – UK NWOBHM gods return to Der Detze Rockt with powerful songs from their 2024 release Songs in Crimson.
• METALUCIFER – Japan’s ultimate heavy metal ninjas, performing their only European show this summer in their original Japanese-German line-up: expect over-the-top anthemic heavy/speed metal!
• VIOLENT SIN – These young Belgian speed metal merchants will strike from the underground.
• MEGATON SWORD – The Swiss epic heavy metal band promises to deliver might and power.
• STALLION – German traditional heavy/speed metal act will finally make their Detze debut after multiple booking attempts.
• KERRIGAN – Freiburg’s old-school heavy metal hopefuls, drawing comparisons to Enforcer and Ambush.
• PHANTOM SPELL – This British band is the brainchild of Kyle McNeill (Seven Sisters) blending prog rock and heavy metal, with synth melodies and intricate guitars.
Running order and details are available on the official site: https://www.derdetzerockt.de 2024 Recap

The 2024 edition of Der Detze Rockt, held on June 14–15, took place under unusually mild and slightly rainy conditions, a welcome contrast to previous years’ intense heat.
The festival opened with the local black/speed act EVIL EXCESS, who had some rough edges and a shaky vocal performance, but displayed youthful energy.
Things picked up quickly with CENTURY (Sweden) delivering sharp, melodic heavy metal with conviction, and local female-fronted GALACTIC SUPERLORDS whose bluesy set won over a growing crowd.

The Germans from WITCHING HOUR and LUCIFUGE brought raw speed and blackened energy to the stage, the latter igniting the first real pit of the weekend and being one of my personal highlights.

Legendary US thrashers WHIPLASH proved that frontman’s age is no barrier to speed and intensity, delivering a high-energy set that, for me, marked the real conclusion of the Friday’s program, since I found little interest in HÄLLAS, whose progressive rock style felt out of step with the festival’s spirit.

Saturday opened strong with SINTAGE, whose tight and fiery speed-boogie heavy metal seemed like a perfect hangover remedy for those who needed it.

Classic heavy metal act from Switzerland AMETHYST delivered an unexpected but good performance with a stand-in female vocalist from Italian band Cherokee, while BALMOG from Spain impressed with their structured yet aggressive black metal.

The Germans from OLD brought their no-frills black/thrash hybrid with commanding stage presence, followed by DEATHRITE’s punk-tinged death metal. RIOT CITY’s technical heavy/power/speed metal was met with admiration, though the Canadians’ heavily vocal-dependent set showed some strain toward the end.

The biggest surprise was perhaps the Belgian black/speed metal merchants BÜTCHER, who demonstrated significant live improvement and thundered through a ferocious set that left no doubts about their rising popularity.

The Dutch death metal veterans ASPHYX reaffirmed their legendary status with a brutal, unrelenting performance bathed in red and blue lights, leading into the grand finale:

TRIUMPH OF DEATH. Tom G. Warrior’s tribute to Hellhammer was as devastating as it was emotional, culminating in a soul-crushing rendition of Triumph of Death itself, leaving no doubt why Der Detze Rockt remains a pilgrimage site for true underground metal devotees.
